The foreign journalist guide to Israeli news online

It had already happened to me that I’ve been asked to either tell about current news in Israel, the Israeli media landscape or both at the same time. Reporting myself from (or on) other places in the world, or simply visiting new countries, I can definitely say I’m eager to get to know the local current news through the local point of view. And obviously it gets even more complicated when it’s not an English speaking country.

Therefore, I made up my mind to compile a list which I believe might help colleagues and friends from around the globe interested in this small part of the world via its own domestic prism, and also providing a number of different angles (mostly politically-wise).

This list contains only English media in Israel (apart from the IBA links) available on the internet, although it’s possible to find other languages in the Israeli media (though much less popular): Arabic, Russian, French and others. I’d be glad to help with these, as much as I can, upon request. If you’re familiar with other English speaking media in Israel, please let me know.

One section unfortunatelly missing in this list is the blogs. Frankly, I’m really not familiar enough with the Israeli blogosphere, either in Hebrew nor in English (or any other language). I’d be real glad to include links to some blogs if anyone interested in sharing.

News websites

ynetnews.com – Its Hebrew edition is Israel’s leading news website, and apparently one of the three most influential media in Israel.

Haaretz Online – The virtual version of the well-known newspaper.
PDFs of the print edition can be found here.

The Jerusalem Post – The virtual version of the newspaper.

Globes - The English edition of Israel’s oldest-circulating economic newspaper.

TV

Channel 2 News – The most popular daily newscast dubbed into English.

The Israel Broadcast Authority (IBA) TV and Radio news – The Israeli public TV and Radio foreign languages daily news briefings.

* The IBA Arabic channel website

Although it is mainly at the disposal of its registered members (most of them are permanent foreign media outlets in Israel), the Foreign Press Association might be of great help for foreign journalists coming to the country. Check out their list of useful contacts.

And last, Middle East newspapers front pages can be found on Newseum.
